German-Hungarian conductor Christian Schumann makes his much-anticipated debut as Music Director at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires this month. On 13 March, the first night of Peter Eötvös’ seminal opera Three Sisters will be the 120th performance of the work since its world premiere in Lyon exactly 20 years ago. Further performances directed by Rubén Szuchmacher and featuring an international cast will take place on 16, 18 and 20 March.
Die Neue Züricher Zeitung calls Schumann “a shining star of the new German conducting generation.” Considering Eötvös to be one of his mentors, Schumann has appeared at major opera houses such as Bayerische Staatsoper and Teatr Wielki in Warsaw conducting his operas Die Tragödie des Teufels and Lady Sarashina respectively. At Grand Theatre Avignon he conducted a double-bill featuring Eötvös’s Senza Sangue and Bartók’s Bluebeard´s Castle. Schumann has also enjoyed a long-term relationship with the Theater St. Gallen where he was Kapellmeister between 2006 – 2009. During his tenure he led performances of Bizet’s Carmen and Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier, while most recently he returned to the theatre for a chamber opera Jakob von Gunten by Benjamin Schweitzer.
Christian Schumann is rapidly establishing a reputation as an opera and symphonic conductor, as well as a leading international force in the contemporary and film conducting world. Recent and upcoming highlights include appearances with Brussels, Hong Kong, Warsaw and Oslo Philharmonic orchestras as well as a London debut with Philharmonia Orchestra.
