LCO: Music Junction
“The impact music can have on someone, and particularly on young people, is simply unparalleled”
(Ollie Howell, 2017)
Ollie Howell latest composition commissioned by London Chamber Orchestra brings together Ollie’s commitment to arts education and outreach work, and his flair for pushing compositional boundaries and thinking outside the box. He was commissioned to write an original piece for chamber orchestra and approximately 100 LCO Music Junction participants of every ability level – from advanced to never having picked up the instrument.
Inspired by the cinematic landscape of modern orchestral film scores, Ollie wrote the piece over the course of the summer and brought it to life through workshops with local schools who work with LCO. Through various compositional techniques such as “swarming” – where the students could choose their own notes from a given framework – Ollie sought to give freedom to all performers and engage with all abilities.
Music Junction’s is the educational outreach initiative of the LCO. Its fundamental aim is to nurture greater empathy and connection between young people from different backgrounds by bringing together young people and giving them shared opportunities to make music as a group.
This project with LCO will culminate in showcase performance on 18 May 2018 at Cadogan Hall to round off their season.
